Mould starts to thrive once relative humidity stays above about 60%. In Singapore that's most days, which is why stains come back after a quick wipe.

FAQ

Your mould questions, answered

Straight answers from a specialist with 12 years in the field. Can't find yours? Ask us on WhatsApp.

What is mould?

Mould is a type of fungus. It thrives in warm, damp and humid places, which describes most Singapore homes for much of the year.

How does mould grow?

Mould reproduces through microscopic spores that float in the air. When a spore lands on a surface with enough moisture, it starts to grow.

Which surfaces are most at risk?

Anything that holds moisture: drywall, concrete walls, wood, carpets, leather goods and clothes.

What causes mould to spread in my home or office?

Moisture is always the root cause. The usual sources are:

  • Leaks and water damage. Seepage, condensation or failed waterproofing can start mould growing within 48 hours.
  • Poor ventilation. Windows kept shut and little airflow trap humid air.
  • Air-con systems. In windowless offices and shops, mouldy AHU filters can spread spores to every room the ducting serves.
  • Furniture. Second-hand pieces may already carry mould, and new furniture delivered in the rain can bring it in.
  • Cross-contamination. Moving affected items between rooms or locations spreads spores.

How many types of mould are there?

There are over a million species. The most common indoors are Cladosporium, Aspergillus, Penicillium and Alternaria. The most dangerous is Stachybotrys chartarum, known as black mould, the most notorious toxic mould.

Can mould affect my health?

Yes. Common symptoms are sneezing, a runny nose, red eyes, skin rashes and throat irritation. Some people also get coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.

How can I tell if it's mould?

Look and smell. Mould can look cottony, velvety or leathery, in white, black, grey or green, and it usually has a musty odour.

Why does mould come back after I clean it with bleach?

Bleach lightens the stain on the surface, but mould roots sit inside porous materials like plaster, paint and wood. If the moisture feeding it is still there, it grows back. We remove the growth, treat the area, seal it and deal with the moisture source.
